Using a new transistor formula, Intel Corporation unveiled a family of Intel Xeon processors and platforms custom made to overcome the challenges surrounding performance, energy efficiency and parallel processing in supercomputers.

Intel's new high-performance computing (HPC) platform, based on the company's second generation of quad-core processors, takes advantage of technological advancements in the new quad-core Intel Xeon processor 5400 series or dual-core Intel Xeon processor 5200 series, and Intel 5400 chipset. Called the biggest transistor advancement in 40 years by Intel Co-Founder Gordon Moore, the processors are the first to use Intel's Hafnium-based High-k metal gate (Hi-k) transistor formula and to be manufactured on the company's 45-nanometer (nm) manufacturing process, boosting performance, lowering power consumption and eliminating eco-unfriendly lead.

"In addition to enhanced performance for traditional large-scale supercomputers, the new Intel Xeon processors have the horsepower to add momentum to the rapidly growing areas of small- and medium-sized high-performance-computer clusters," said Richard Dracott, general manager for HPC at Intel. "Systems utilizing the new Intel 5400 chipset will deliver even more enhanced node performance across a wide variety of compute workloads, as well as improved power efficiency, and new levels of scalable performance at the cluster level."
