Windows Live Messenger and older MSN Messenger supports plugins. Thought this support has been disabled by default. To enable it you must hack some registry. Don't worry it's easy.

Hacking Windows Registry: Open regedit and add new key to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger The key must be named to "AddInFeatureEnabled". After adding the key, change it value to "1" and you're done.

Alternative method: You can use EnableMessengerPlugins.exe which Niko Rosvall created. It automatize making necessary changes to registry. You can also use it if you want to disable Windows Live Messenger plugins support. EnableMessengerPlugins.exe writes to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, so it works under normal user priviledges. If it throws an error, make sure that you have opened Windows Live Messenger before. Because when you first time launch Windows Live Messenger it adds HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger registry key. So if you have never started Messenger, this registry key doesn't exist.

Installing AutoMessage: Note that AutoMessage comes without any warranty. So if it messes up your operating system or something you can keep all the peaces. I have tested AutoMessage pretty well and I also use it myself. So it should work like a charm. 😉 AutoMessage is freeware.

AutoMessage is written in C# so it needs .NET Framework. Please use version 2 of the .NET Framework. AutoMessage should work with other versions too but it's not been tested.

Just download the zip file below and unzip it somewhere.( I assume that you have enabled plugin support already.) Then reboot your messenger and goto Settings. You should see new feature "Add-ins". Use it to select the plugin add check the box so that plugin is used when you're not in online mode.

What AutoMessage do? It just informs your buddies that you're really away from computer. At the moment messages are hardcoded to the plugin, so you can't change them. There are different message for every mode. OutToLunch, Away, Busy and so on. (e.g message for busy is "AutoMessage: I'm busy. ")

Get AutoMessage: You can download AutoMessage from here.

Important note: After you have unzipped AutoMessage, do not rename the dll file. If you do the plugin will not load. This is restriction of Messenger API.
