Microsoft’s Xbox 360 surpassed Nintendo’s Wii in U.S. unit sales in September, according to statistics released today by the NPD market research firm. The Sept. 25 release of “Halo 3″ is being credited with spurring Xbox 360 sales for the month. Here’s the rough breakdown for the month among the current-generation consoles:

  • Xbox 360: 528,000
  • Wii: 501,000
  • PlayStation 3: 119,000
