A couple of days ago on his P-I reader blog and 8bitjoystick.com, Jacob Metcalf reported that "Halo" developer Bungie Studios is splitting from Microsoft. He cited a friend close to someone who works at Bungie, and he reprinted an e-mail to support the assertion.

I dug into this myself earlier in the week, after seeing his post, but I wasn't able to get independent confirmation from anyone inside. Nor did Microsoft's official response clarify anything: "There's been no such announcement. We continue to celebrate the tremendous success of the global phenomenon that is Halo 3."

Tuesday, I interviewed Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, about the latest Zune devices. Before the interview ended, I asked directly if Microsoft and Bungie are splitting. I'm printing his response here not because it provides an answer but because I know people will want to see what he said.
