Toshiba Corp. on Tuesday unveiled its new notebooks for gamers that use two Nvidia GeForce 8M graphics processing units (GPUs). With the release of Satellite X205 gaming notebooks Toshiba not only becomes the first notebook maker to install GeForce 8M SLI, but also the first major notebook manufacturer who implemented a multi-GPU technology at all.

“Last year, Toshiba launched their gaming notebook lineup with Nvidia GPUs, evolving the notebook gaming experience with a unique blend of sheer performance, practical versatility, and elegant style. Toshiba’s addition of Nvidia SLI technology to their gaming notebooks further demonstrates their commitment to delivering the ultimate entertainment experience to gamers on the go, said Rene Haas, general manager of notebook GPUs at Nvidia.

Even though multi-GPU technology for notebooks was announced over one and a half years ago by Nvidia Corp., only a dozen of notebook makers mostly focused on extreme gamers have introduced laptops equipped with two graphics chips. Toshiba is the first tier-one maker of mobile computers who decided that its customers will take advantage of two DirectX 10-supporing Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics processing units while designers of graphics solutions manage to pack DirectX 10 into a mobile GPU with decent performance for gaming. Unfortunately, it is doubtful that two GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB each can deliver performance higher compared to previous-generation single-chip GeForce Go 7950 GTX solution.
