This Ajah Wordpress plugin caps the number of comments shown on any post to 50, which makes the post load much more faster, especially if the number of comments comes close to 1000. Above the latest comments there is a message with a link, with which you can load all comments. No page reload is needed, the comments are simply inserted into the page.
