PSone games, already available for download and play on the Sony PSP (in some regions), are soon to work on the PlayStation 3 console too - as part of a new firmware update being released by Sony.

Rumour has it that the new games will be available from April 26th, with a rash of PS3 compatible PSone classics set to follow - presumably via the PS3 online Store. We're told that while all games will also work on the PSP - when copied from the PS3 hard-drive to the memory stick - that only some of the retrograde hits currently available for the PSP will work on the PS3 from the off.

Currently, the PSone downloads in question are only available in the US and Japan, but with the expansion of the program now apparently coming to the fore - it seems likely that PAL regions will soon be able to download the titles in question for their PSPs and PS3s (given the availability of the update in such countries).

PSP update version 3.40 is now also out, enabling future PS1 downloads, and gamers can now update their PS3 with a new patch which will render the latest retro titles playable when available.
