The final version of the specially crafted Opera web browser for the Wii console has been released, and includes a number of enhancements over the test version that was available up to now. Start-up is now faster, as are scroll and zoom speeds. Google and Yahoo search tools have also been integrated, with parental controls also improved for keeping youngsters away from the saucy stuff on the Wii's Internet Channel.

The final version of the browser will be free to download until June, and all you'll need to do to grab this new version is install a small system update first. After June, the Opera browser will cost 500 Wii points.

The final browser is the culmination of testing on-going since late December, and not only speeds up surfing but also makes it easier to type addresses and the like via a few handy shortcuts. User figures for the Internet Channel remain unknown, but we did this week learn that Virgin Radio were launching a radio player for the PS3 and Wii; suggesting various people are certainly getting excited about the possibilities.

"The Opera-powered Internet Channel for Wii is about making the Web easy to use for anyone, at any age," says Scott Hedrick, executive vice president of Devices for Opera Software. "We received a lot of user feedback after the Christmas release of the original version, and based on that feedback we have created a browser that is clean, intuitive and made for viewing on the TV. Working with Nintendo has been great education for us as browser makers, and has helped us to make a product that matches Wii’s ability to reach across generations and bring enjoyment to all."
