Could Quake 3 be en route to the Xbox 360 console? It certainly looks that way given the new listing for the title spotted on the ESRB website. Activision, perhaps unsurprisingly, aren't going to comment on this 'speculation', however the US ratings board website has let the cat out of the bag on a number of occasions in the past, so seems to be a reliable source.

Pi Studios are listed as the studio behind Quake 3 on the 360, the developer having previously worked on ports of Mercenaries 2 and Call of Duty 2 - which also links them to Quake publisher Activision. Of course, with Quake IV already out on Microsoft's next-gen system, it would seem rather odd for the publisher to opt to release an older version on the format... rather this looks increasingly like it could be a new release for id's hit on the Arcade service instead.

This would be something of a coup for Microsoft, and probably wasn't even possible until the platform holder raised the file limit associated with their service. Quake III Arena was a multiplayer focussed release back in 1999, and was certainly popular with the online crowd for many years that followed.

It remains to be seen whether the ESRB has made a mistake here, or indeed what 'kind' of release this might turn out to be... but needless to say we're enthused.
