Eager to keep pace with the TV and video-download services currently filtering onto Xbox Live, Sony worldwide studios chief Phil Harrison has revealed that TV on-demand could be heading to the PlayStation 3 sooner than you might think - despite the relative youth of the firm's online offering.

"I think PlayStation 3 needs to stand for gaming and digital entertainment in the living room pushing the envelope of high definition, pushing the envelope of broadband, and of course that includes more than just games," Harrison told US site 1UP.com.

"We don't have the announcements that you're probably looking for today, but it is digital data. We have a hard drive, we have a commerce engine, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we will have that on the network very shortly."

So far, TV content for the Xbox 360 is only available via Live in the United states, but iterations of the service for other regions is most certainly on the cards. Content is presently available in standard and high-definition modes. Meanwhile, background downloading is expected to hit PS3 Online soon, with on-demand video perhaps following briskly.
