Speaking in a new interview with Wired Magazine, Epic boss Mark Rein has expressed his pleasure at the ongoing success of Epic's middleware technology, the latest iteration of which is the Unreal Engine 3. The game engine has now been licensed by dozens of third-party game creators, eager to use 'out of the box' tech such as this to make development easier.

The success of the latest engine was highlighted by the news recently that a Japanese developer has now licensed the technology, marking a significant new breakthrough for Epic's tools.

"It's definitely a challenge to convince Japanese developers to work with a third-party technology like ours," Rein revealed in the interview. "But Square Enix, they're the granddaddy. I'm hoping that'll be pulling the stopper out of the drain, and we'll gradually crack that nut. We've been looking to hire somebody in Japan, to be our representative there."

Rein also revealed that despite the success of the Nintendo Wii, Epic had no plans to create a version of the Unreal Engine 3 for the console, suggesting that the new system simply isn't powerful enough to take advantage of the technology. "Red Steel, Splinter Cell -- those use our previous engine technology. But it's not in our plans to bring Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. It's really designed for next-gen, high-definition."

Rein concluded defending the PS3 from its detractors, predicting big things from the next-gen Sony machine. More on this as we get it.
