As the world becomes an increasingly mobile place, portable speakers tend to become
smaller, lighter and more powerful with each year. And a very good  example of this
development is represented by the new Wavio portable speakers from Onkyo, which - despite the fact that they come in quite a small form factor - offer quite a high quality, crisp and (relatively) powerful sound.

And all of this due to a little design feature called SD horn (Super Dimensional Horn) that allows a "wider" sound to be developed from the specially-shaped drivers. Moreover, these portable speakers feature a twin port double bass reflex cabinet, which has the purpose of becoming some sort of “double structure” which amplifies the power and quality of the sound due to the resonance phenomenon. Another very interesting thing about these devices is the fact that they have an anti magnetic design (JEITA), which protects them from the interference of those all-so present electromagnetic waves.

Here is a list of the most important features and specifications these portable speakers have to offer:

  • dimensions: 170 x 120 x 54 mm
  • weight: 400 grams
  • batteries: 4 AA batteries
  • power: 1.5W + 1.5W
  • input impedance: 75kÙ
  • input sensitivity: maximum 300mV
  • input type: 3.5 mm Line-in jack
  • driver dimensions: 3 cm.

The Onkyo Company has announced that these very interesting portable speakers will be released on January 27. However, there's no word on the pricing yet, and it remains to be seen whether the quality of the sound and its power come anywhere near what the manufacturers boast.
