“Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and other high-tech companies are preparing to push for data-privacy legislation next year to replace what they consider an outdated patchwork of state and federal laws that are inconsistent and burdensome, according to a 9News.com report. Earlier this year, the companies joined the Consumer Privacy Legislative Forum to begin the push for such legislation which is designed to help increase online privacy in tandem with the increasing use of online record keeping. Opposition to the legislation is reported to be focused on a concern that this would set an example for an industry drafting its own regulations.
